Donor human milk (DHM) is a safe resource which has been donated by screened donors prior to being tested and pasteurised by the Hearts Milk Bank. This course will enable the users to confidently discuss and share information about the practical aspects of human milk banking – testing, heat treatment and storage of the milk – with colleagues and with families whose infants may require it. Current national recommendations are introduced and explained with links for additional background learning. The tracking and transportation of donor human milk is fully illustrated to facilitate its future safe handling.

Donor human milk is a safe resource, which has been donated by screened donors prior to being tested and pasteurised by the Hearts Milk Bank. This course will enable the users to confidently accept pasteurised DHM onto the NNU, be able to safely transfer it for ongoing storage and understand the storage, thawing, handling, aliquoting and pre-feed safety requirements on the NNU or in other hospital locations (central milk kitchen/milk storage unit, maternity ward, paediatric/surgical paediatric wards). Current national recommendations are explained together with the background essential learning to facilitate discussions with parents and carers.
